For the things you stumble into and want to keep.
Most vocabulary apps are built for studying lists. MagpieDeck is built for the wild — a word from a novel, a podcast, an article, a phrase that catches you in conversation. Save it in two seconds. Come back to it before you forget.
Why MagpieDeck exists
Curious readers collect words the way other people collect postcards. Without a place to put them, the words slip past — and with them, a little of the texture of what we read. MagpieDeck is that place: a private, durable journal for the language you want to keep.
The credo is one sentence: save any word you see, understand it, hear it, use it, remember it forever.
How it works
Capture
Type a word into the hero, or paste a sentence and pick the one you want. The provenance — page, podcast, sentence — comes with it.
Understand
Definition, part of speech, etymology — auto-populated from a dictionary, editable in one tap.
Hear it
Native pronunciation, one tap. Saying a word out loud is half of remembering it.
Remember
The FSRS spaced-repetition algorithm schedules each word for the moment you're most likely to forget it. Reviews are short and kind.
The local-first promise
You can use MagpieDeck without an account. Your first words live in your browser (IndexedDB) — no sign-up gate, no email confirmation, no waiting room. When you do create an account, your words sync across devices and become recoverable if your browser storage clears.
Either way, the data is yours. Export is a planned feature, not a paywall.
